01 — PROBLEM

Understanding the challenge

Ice fishing is a longstanding Québec tradition, yet conventional shelters present challenges in transportation, seasonal installation, and environmental impact. In collaboration with Sépaq, we explored how to create a more sustainable, practical, and comfortable alternative.

02 — RESEARCH

Design direction

Inspired by alpine landscapes and nautical structures, ASVIK translates Sépaq's requirements into a lightweight, adaptable shelter designed for winter environments.

Typology & human-scale testing

Exploring different shelter typologies led us to the A-frame structure. Full scale spatial tests helped refine its proportions and assess comfort for 2/3 users.

Materials & construction

Inspired by nautical hardware, a twist to lock fastening system for easy assembly and removal. The insulated covering combines recycled sailcloth and locally sourced Québec sheep's wool, providing thermal protection while allowing compact seasonal storage.

  • Left over Sheep's Wool
  • Recycled Plastic

Modular construction

Moulded ice block foundations instead of permanent concrete supports. An aluminium grid and modular connectors form a removable base, designed to minimize environmental impact and simplify seasonal installation.
